EFSA Finds Roasted Sacha Inchi Seeds Safe Under Proposed Conditions
A new EFSA opinion resolves earlier questions about alkaloids in roasted sacha inchi seeds, while stressing that the conclusion applies to the assessed food and its proposed conditions of use.

The European Food Safety Authority has concluded that roasted sacha inchi seeds are safe under the proposed conditions of use. The opinion could help clarify how this traditional Peruvian food should be understood by cooks and shoppers, but it is not the same as a blanket approval for every sacha inchi product.
What EFSA assessed
Sacha inchi, also known as the Inca peanut, comes from the Amazonian regions of South America. Its seeds are eaten as a whole food after processing and roasting. In its latest scientific opinion, EFSA assessed roasted seeds from Plukenetia volubilis L. as a traditional food from a third country.
The assessment followed a request from the European Commission. The product considered by the panel was not an unspecified plant seed or a homemade preparation. It was a defined food consisting of roasted sacha inchi seeds intended to be eaten whole. The opinion describes a process involving shelling and peeling, washing in hot water and roasting in a roasting machine at temperatures of up to 120°C.
That distinction matters in a home kitchen. A scientific conclusion about a specified food does not automatically establish the safety of unlabelled seeds, ornamental plant material, raw seeds from an unknown supplier or products made with a different process.
Why alkaloids were the central question
EFSA had previously identified uncertainty about the possible presence of alkaloids in roasted sacha inchi seeds. Alkaloids are a broad group of naturally occurring compounds, and the earlier uncertainty was enough to raise safety objections during the previous assessment.
For the new application, the applicant supplied additional analyses. The panel reviewed data from five batches of raw seeds and five batches of roasted seeds, along with information from the scientific literature. The new work identified trigonelline as the only quantifiable alkaloid in the tested material. EFSA noted that dietary exposure to trigonelline, including exposure from coffee at higher amounts than those determined in the assessed food, has not been associated with adverse effects.
On that basis, the panel considered that the new evidence addressed the earlier uncertainty. It also concluded that the proposed food was not nutritionally disadvantageous under the stated conditions of use. The detailed opinion includes microbiological specifications and contaminant requirements for the food as assessed, including limits for yeasts, moulds, Escherichia coli, aerobic microbial counts and the absence of Salmonella in the tested portion.
What the opinion does — and does not — mean
EFSA provides scientific risk assessment; it does not itself place a novel food on the European market. As EFSA explains in its novel-food guidance, the European Commission and EU Member State authorities decide whether a novel food can be authorised and under which conditions it may be used and labelled.
For consumers, the practical message is therefore measured:
- The assessment concerns roasted sacha inchi seeds, not every form of the plant.
- The safety conclusion applies to the proposed conditions of use and the food described in the opinion.
- EFSA’s conclusion should not be read as a product review, a health claim or proof that every seed sold under a similar name has been assessed.
How to handle sacha inchi in a home kitchen
If roasted sacha inchi seeds become part of your pantry, the safest approach is to treat them like any other unfamiliar seed or nut-style ingredient: identify the food clearly, follow the label and avoid improvising with raw or unlabelled material.
- Buy a clearly labelled food product. The package should identify the ingredient as sacha inchi or Plukenetia volubilis and state that it is intended for human consumption. Do not assume that a seed sold for planting or decoration is edible.
- Check the preparation status. EFSA’s opinion concerns roasted seeds. Do not assume that raw seeds, seed flour, oil or another preparation has exactly the same safety profile or conditions of use.
- Do not copy the industrial process at home. The opinion describes a defined production process and tested batches. It is not a home-roasting recipe, and heating an unknown seed at home does not reproduce the evidence reviewed by EFSA.
- Follow storage and allergen information. Keep the product as directed on its packaging, protect it from moisture and discard it if it develops mould, an unusual odour or a rancid taste. If you have a known seed or nut allergy, read the allergen statement and follow your healthcare professional’s advice.
Once the product is properly identified and sold as a food, roasted sacha inchi can be used in ordinary portions as a snack or as a topping for salads, grains and yoghurt. Those serving ideas are culinary suggestions, not additional safety findings from the EFSA assessment.
A useful update for everyday food decisions
The significance of the opinion is not that a fashionable ingredient has suddenly become risk-free in every form. It is that EFSA has revisited a specific food after new data resolved a defined uncertainty. That is how food-safety decisions are meant to work: identify the hazard, request better evidence, assess the exposure and state the conditions clearly.
For cooks, the most useful takeaway is simple. When trying a less familiar seed, choose a product with a clear food label, respect the preparation described by the producer and avoid treating a scientific opinion about one defined food as permission to experiment with an unknown raw ingredient. The EFSA decision gives regulators a stronger basis for the next authorisation step, while giving consumers a more precise explanation of what has actually been assessed.
