EFSA’s Microplastics Episode Gives Home Cooks a Clearer Answer

A recent EFSA podcast explains what is known about microplastics in food, what remains uncertain, and which practical steps make sense in an ordinary kitchen.

Home cooks have a useful new reality check on microplastics in food. In a recent episode of EFSA’s Science on the Menu podcast, food-safety specialist Elena Rovesti explains how plastic particles can enter the food chain, why current studies are difficult to compare, and what consumers can reasonably do while research continues.

The most important message is one of proportion: the episode does not announce a new consumer warning, a recall, or a maximum amount of microplastics that people must avoid. It also does not advise people to stop eating fresh fruit. Instead, it separates established facts from questions that science has not answered yet.

What EFSA can say about microplastics in food

EFSA’s background page on microplastics and nanoplastics describes microplastics as particles from about 1 micrometre to 5 millimetres in size. Nanoplastics are smaller still and can be invisible to the naked eye. Because these particles persist in the environment, they can move through soil, water and air and potentially enter food.

The podcast describes several possible points of contact. A plant may encounter particles in soil or irrigation water. Agricultural materials, transport equipment and processing belts can create additional contact before food reaches a shop. Packaging is one possible pathway, but it is not the only one, and the episode does not support the idea that every plastic-wrapped food is automatically unsafe.

EFSA’s expert also discusses food-contact materials. Based on the evidence available to date, a recent scientific statement did not identify a high release of microplastics from these materials. At the same time, the evidence is not complete enough to answer every question about exposure or health effects. That combination matters: no clear high-risk finding is not the same as proof that every uncertainty has been resolved.

Why the evidence is still difficult to interpret

Researchers can detect and measure particles, but the work is technically demanding. Different studies may use different definitions, sampling methods and laboratory procedures. Food has to be separated from the particles before analysis, and the very equipment used in a laboratory can introduce plastic contamination. Results from two laboratories may therefore not be directly comparable.

EFSA’s expert says there is still no definitive answer on the health effects of dietary exposure. Larger particles appear more likely to pass through the digestive system, while smaller particles may behave differently. Some laboratory research suggests that very small particles can enter cells, but that does not by itself establish a confirmed harm to people from normal eating patterns.

There is also no established household threshold that would let someone look at a punnet of strawberries, a bottle of water or a container and decide that its microplastic content is safe or unsafe. EFSA is working with experts and partner organisations on methods for measuring exposure and assessing possible risks. Until those methods are more consistent, dramatic claims based on a single test or headline should be treated cautiously.

What makes sense in a normal kitchen

The practical response is deliberately modest. The EFSA discussion supports ordinary food-safety habits and informed choices, not a special detox routine.

  1. Keep eating fresh produce as normal. The episode’s expert says she would not be concerned about consuming fresh fruit. Choose, store and prepare produce using the normal food-safety guidance from your local authority.
  2. Do not confuse washing with a microplastics guarantee. Routine produce hygiene is important for dirt and microbial hazards, but it cannot create a proven zero-particle result. Washing should be part of safe food preparation, not a promise about an exposure level that science cannot currently calculate at home.
  3. Reduce single-use plastic for the reason EFSA gives. The expert recommends reducing single-use plastics as a straightforward way to limit plastic entering the waste stream and environment. That is a sensible environmental action; the episode does not claim that one packaging swap will measurably remove a personal health risk.
  4. Follow product-specific alerts separately. If a food-safety authority issues a recall or contamination notice, follow that instruction. Emerging-risk research about microplastics is not a substitute for an official recall, and a recall should never be ignored because a product looks clean.

The useful takeaway

For home cooks, the value of EFSA’s update is its restraint. Microplastics are a genuine research topic, and they can reach food through more than one environmental and processing pathway. But current evidence does not justify a blanket warning against fresh produce, a claim that all plastic packaging is dangerous, or a made-up household limit.

The best current method is to keep food handling safe, avoid sensational claims, reduce unnecessary single-use plastic where practical, and look for updates from food-safety authorities as EFSA’s assessment develops. That approach respects both sides of the evidence: the issue deserves serious research, but today’s kitchen decisions should still be based on confirmed guidance rather than fear.
