EFSA’s Latest Pesticide-Residue Data Put Food Shopping in Perspective

EFSA’s latest report finds high compliance with EU pesticide limits, while its 2024 monitoring data explain what the numbers mean for everyday food choices.

European food safety authorities have released the latest figures on pesticide residues in food, giving shoppers a broader view of how the European market is monitored. Published on 5 May 2026, the European Food Safety Authority’s report covers more than 125,000 samples collected in 2024 across coordinated EU sampling, national control programmes and increased import checks.

The headline is reassuring but needs context: compliance with EU legal limits remains high, and EFSA says the estimated risk to consumer health from the foods tested remains low. The release is a market-monitoring update, not a product-specific recall or a claim that every item on a shopping list has been individually tested.

What the EU-coordinated samples found

The coordinated programme is designed to provide a representative picture of commonly eaten foods across Europe. In 2024, authorities collected 9,842 samples covering aubergines, bananas, broccoli, cultivated fungi, grapefruits, melons, sweet peppers, table grapes, virgin olive oil, wheat grain, bovine fat and chicken eggs.

EFSA reports that 98.8% of those samples complied with EU legislation. No measurable pesticide residues were found in 43.1% of the samples, while 54.5% contained residues within the applicable maximum residue levels, or MRLs. The remaining 2.4% exceeded an MRL. An exceedance is a regulatory finding that triggers follow-up by authorities; it should not automatically be read as a measure of personal health risk.

That distinction matters in the kitchen. An MRL is used to control residues in food under EU rules, while EFSA also assesses whether estimated dietary exposure could exceed health-based safety thresholds. The report says that the overall consumer-health risk from the tested foods remains low.

A larger national monitoring picture

National control programmes complement the coordinated sample by reflecting national diets, local priorities, previous findings and laboratory capacity. They covered 86,449 samples in the latest report. Of these, 98.2% complied with EU MRLs, a result broadly consistent with the previous years listed by EFSA.

Nearly 60% of the samples, or 58.4%, contained no quantifiable residues. Another 38.3% contained one or more residues within the legal limits. Limits were exceeded in 3.3% of samples, and EFSA reports that 1.8% were confirmed as non-compliant after measurement uncertainty was taken into account.

For home cooks, the practical lesson is to avoid treating the presence of a detectable residue as equivalent to an unsafe food. The report’s figures describe a regulated food system in which authorities test, compare results with legal limits and take proportionate action when a sample does not comply.

Imported foods are checked before sale

EFSA also separates results from 39,433 samples collected under increased import controls. These checks focus on consignments, products or origins identified by Member States as requiring closer attention. The consignment is held at the border until laboratory results are available, and it can enter the EU market only when the results confirm compliance.

Among these imported samples, 38.3% had no quantifiable residues and 56.2% contained residues within the permitted limits. Around 5.5% exceeded EU limits, with 3.6% classified as non-compliant. Those figures describe a control point that can prevent non-compliant batches from reaching consumers.

What the announcement means for a weekly shop

EFSA’s update does not identify a single fruit, vegetable, grain or animal product as a general risk. Instead, it shows how different layers of testing work together: representative sampling measures the wider market, national programmes target local priorities and import controls screen consignments before release.

That makes the report useful background when food-safety headlines focus on one chemical or one test result. A residue finding has to be interpreted alongside the food involved, the measured level, the relevant legal limit and the estimated exposure. The percentages in this report cannot be used to calculate the safety of one untested item in a household kitchen.

The announcement also does not present a new household decontamination method. It is therefore not a substitute for product-specific notices from national food-safety authorities, nor does it support inventing a special washing or cooking procedure. For everyday cooking, the evidence-based takeaway is simpler: use ordinary food-safety practices, pay attention to official alerts and interpret residue claims through the full regulatory context rather than through a single alarming number.
