FAO Launches CropSuit to Help Farmers Match Crops to Local Conditions

FAO has launched CropSuit, a free web tool that combines soil, climate and landscape data to help farmers choose crops suited to specific locations.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has launched CropSuit, a free web-based application designed to help farmers, advisers and governments identify which crops are most likely to perform well in a particular location.

FAO announced the tool on 2 July 2026 during its Global Conference on Smart Farming. CropSuit combines soil information with climate data, topography, land cover and other environmental factors. Users can explore crop-suitability assessments where the necessary data is available, helping them make more informed decisions before planting.

The launch matters beyond agriculture because the choices made before a crop reaches the kitchen can influence the resilience, diversity and reliability of food systems. CropSuit is not a recipe planner, a food-safety alert or a supermarket availability forecast. It is a planning tool for the field. Its purpose is to support better crop selection under local growing conditions, including conditions affected by land degradation and climate change.

How CropSuit works

According to FAO’s announcement, the application draws on several kinds of information rather than relying on a single measure such as rainfall. Soil characteristics are combined with climate, elevation, land cover and other environmental data to identify crops with a stronger likelihood of performing well in a given parcel of land.

That distinction is important. A crop that succeeds in one field may struggle in a nearby field with different soil or water conditions. By bringing those variables together, CropSuit is intended to help users compare options before investing in seed, fertiliser, labour or irrigation.

FAO says the tool forms part of its Soil Mapping for Resilient Agrifood Systems programme, known as SoilFER. It builds on the Global Agro-Ecological Zoning framework developed with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. The app also includes information on nutrient-dense, traditional and indigenous crops with potential value for food security and nutrition.

One field may suit maize, another a different crop

FAO highlights an example from Zambia. CropSuit showed that maize performed well in some fields, while neighbouring plots with different soil characteristics were better suited to crops such as cassava, cowpea and fonio.

This example illustrates the practical idea behind the platform: crop choice should reflect local conditions rather than follow a one-size-fits-all assumption. Better matching may help farmers use fertiliser more efficiently, improve land management and strengthen production potential. FAO also links the tool with possible benefits for farmer incomes and resilience, although the application itself cannot guarantee a harvest or replace local knowledge.

The organisation says CropSuit is intended for farmers, extension services, researchers, planners and policymakers. The level of detail available will depend on the coverage and quality of data for a particular area, so the tool should be treated as decision support rather than an automatic planting prescription.

For home cooks, the immediate takeaway is not that a particular ingredient will suddenly become cheaper, more available or easier to find. FAO has made no such claim. The consumer relevance is longer term: more precise crop planning can support food systems that are better adapted to local soils, weather patterns and environmental pressures.

That could matter for the range of grains, pulses, fruits and other ingredients available in different regions over time. It may also support greater attention to crops that are nutritious, locally appropriate or traditionally important but less widely grown. Those are potential system-level effects, not promises about a specific food product.

CropSuit also shows why food resilience begins well before shopping or cooking. A recipe depends on ingredients, and ingredients depend on farms, water, soil, climate and the decisions made before planting. Tools that improve those decisions can contribute to a more adaptable food chain, particularly in areas where degradation or changing weather is already affecting productivity.
