FAO Maps Laos’ Next Step on Food Residue Monitoring
A FAO-led assessment is helping Lao PDR strengthen how it monitors veterinary drug residues in food, with implications for consumer protection, food trade and antimicrobial-resistance management.

A recent FAO announcement describes the next phase of Lao PDR’s work to monitor veterinary drug residues in food. The assessment does not identify a recalled product or announce contamination in food sold to consumers. Instead, it examines the country’s capacity to detect, analyse and manage residues before they become a wider food-safety problem.
Veterinary medicines are used to protect animal health and treat disease, but their use must be managed carefully when animals or animal-derived products enter the food chain. Residues of those medicines can become a food-safety concern when monitoring systems are incomplete or when products are not used responsibly. What the FAO assessment examined
The assessment was carried out using FAO’s Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods Tool. It combined a national awareness workshop with consultations involving government ministries and other stakeholders, followed by technical visits to laboratories involved in food and feed analysis. That combination matters because a functioning monitoring programme depends on more than a single laboratory. Authorities need clear responsibilities, reliable sampling, suitable analytical methods, data management and a process for acting on results.
The technical visits included the National Animal Health Laboratory, the National Animal Feed Standards and Analysis Center and the National Center for Food and Drug Analysis.
