A FAO expert session has highlighted real-time monitoring, traceability and data analysis as tools for preventing food-safety problems earlier in the food chain.

Food safety often reaches the public conversation only after a recall, an outbreak or a failed inspection. A new update from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations argues that better use of data could move much of that work earlier, before unsafe food reaches consumers.

Published on 7 July 2026, the FAO report summarizes a session on “Smart Farming for Food Safety” held during the organization’s first Global Conference on Smart Farming. The central message was practical: real-time monitoring, traceability and stronger analytical tools can help farmers and food-safety authorities identify hazards sooner and make better-informed decisions.

Rather than presenting one universal technology, the group discussed a combination of systems. Sensors and other monitoring tools can provide information while crops are being produced. FAO also pointed to artificial intelligence as a way to examine large datasets, detect patterns and develop predictive tools for farmers. From late reaction to earlier prevention

The difference between reacting to a problem and spotting a warning sign early matters at every stage of the food chain. If a risk is identified while a crop is growing or before ingredients enter processing, producers and authorities may have more options to investigate, isolate or manage it. One of the more important cautions in the FAO update is that smart farming should remain accessible, affordable and farmer-centred. The organization warned against creating new costs or dependencies that small producers cannot manage. A sophisticated system that only works for the largest farms would leave gaps in the very supply chains it is meant to strengthen.

FAO’s experts therefore called for inclusive access to reliable, high-quality data, more support for sharing information and better partnerships between farmers, researchers, authorities and technology providers. FAO’s food-safety session adds another dimension: digital tools can also help identify contamination, authenticity and supply-chain risks earlier.
