FAO Launches CropSuit to Match Crops With Local Conditions

FAO’s new free web tool combines soil, climate and landscape data to help farmers choose crops suited to each location, with consequences that could eventually reach everyday food choices.

Food resilience begins long before ingredients reach a market or a kitchen. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has launched CropSuit, a free web-based application designed to help farmers, advisers and governments identify which crops are best suited to particular parcels of land.

The announcement is relevant to anyone interested in where everyday food comes from. CropSuit is not a meal planner, shopping tool or yield guarantee, but it addresses a practical question behind every food system: which crops are most likely to perform well under local soil, climate and landscape conditions?

What CropSuit does

According to FAO, the tool combines soil information with climate data, topography, land cover and other environmental factors. Users can explore crop suitability assessments for locations covered by the underlying data. The purpose is to support better decisions before planting, when choices about crops, fertiliser and land use can affect both productivity and resilience.

This matters because a field is not defined by regional averages alone. Two neighbouring plots can receive similar rainfall while having different soil characteristics, drainage or fertility. A recommendation based on local conditions may therefore be more useful than relying only on what has traditionally been planted in the wider area.

A Zambia example shows why local data matters

FAO says CropSuit is already being demonstrated through its work in Zambia. In one example, the application indicated that maize was well suited to some fields, while nearby plots with different soil conditions were better matched to cassava, cowpea or fonio. The result is not a prescription to replace one crop everywhere. It is evidence that crop choices can be more precise when soil and climate information are considered together.

That distinction is important for food coverage. A more diverse range of crops can support local nutrition and reduce dependence on a single staple when conditions change. It can also help farmers consider traditional or underused crops that are adapted to particular environments but receive less attention than major commodities.

Why this belongs in a cooking and food conversation

For home cooks, the immediate effect is indirect. CropSuit will not tell a shopper which tomato to buy or predict the price of flour next week. Its value sits further upstream, in the decisions that influence which ingredients are available, how reliably they can be produced and how much pressure farming places on soil and water.

FAO presents the tool as part of a broader effort to improve food production while using resources more efficiently. Better crop selection can support more targeted fertiliser use, stronger production potential and more sustainable land management. If those decisions are adopted at scale, they could help food systems remain productive when weather patterns, soil conditions or input costs become less predictable.

That does not mean every CropSuit recommendation will translate into a new product on store shelves. The application depends on the quality and coverage of available data, and local decisions still require farmer knowledge, field observation and advice from qualified agricultural services. The technology is best understood as decision support rather than an automated answer.

The wider SoilFER programme

CropSuit is part of FAO’s SoilFER programme, which focuses on soil mapping and resilient agrifood systems. The programme combines field surveys, soil analysis, mapping, crop modelling and digital tools. FAO says projects are being implemented in countries including Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya and Zambia.

The organisation also links the work to land degradation, which it says affects agricultural productivity for 1.7 billion people worldwide. That figure gives the launch a wider significance: improving crop suitability decisions is not only about increasing harvests, but also about making better use of land that is already under pressure.

The most useful takeaway is simple: food choice starts with place. The crops that make sense for a farm depend on soil, rainfall, temperature, terrain and available resources.
