FAO Puts Indonesian Smart-Farming Foods on the Table in Rome
A Rome culinary showcase connected Indonesia’s smart-farming projects with sago, tuna, bananas and other foods, showing how agricultural innovation can translate into practical food diversity.

Smart farming is often discussed through sensors, data and automation. At a recent culinary showcase in Rome, FAO and Indonesia demonstrated what those tools ultimately need to deliver: more diverse, resilient and useful food on the table. The event brought together farming initiatives, local ingredients and traditional dishes in a format that made the connection between production and eating unusually clear.
As FAO reported, the showcase was organised with the Embassy of Indonesia in Rome and the FAO Country Office in Indonesia as part of the organisation’s first Global Conference on Smart Farming. Held at the FAO Museum and Network’s Foods Lab, it presented Indonesian food traditions alongside examples of how technology and local knowledge are being combined in farming communities.
From farm projects to recognisable dishes
The menu was designed to make those connections tangible. Sago from Papua was used in several dishes, including Papeda with Yellow Tuna Fish Soup, Spicy Indonesian Sago Fried Noodles and Eurimoo, a dessert made with sago flour and ripe bananas. The dishes were not presented as isolated recipes. Instead, they illustrated how a crop, a processing method and a regional food tradition can travel together from a community project to a shared meal.
Other examples came from across Indonesia’s food system. The showcase highlighted a smart fisheries village in West Java, young chilli growers in Sumatra and banana farmers in East Java using precision-agriculture tools. This combination matters because food resilience is rarely built around one technology or one ingredient. It depends on the ability to produce, process and use food in ways that fit local conditions.
Why sago was central to the demonstration
Sago gave the event a particularly practical focus. In Yoboi Village in Papua, FAO and Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture are supporting local communities with improved sago processing. According to the organisation, the work has reduced processing time from several days to around five hours, while also creating opportunities for higher-value products and wider market access.
That detail is important for cooks and food shoppers because processing is part of what makes an ingredient useful. A crop may be abundant, but it still needs reliable ways to become flour, noodles, a staple dish or another food that can be stored, transported and prepared. The showcase suggested that better processing does not have to replace tradition. It can help traditional ingredients reach more kitchens while keeping their cultural context visible.

FAO’s message was not that digital tools should make every food system look the same. The organisation described smart farming as a way to support timely data, targeted interventions, better decisions and improved productivity.
