The message is practical and proportionate: foodborne transmission is rare and linked to specific situations, but a small number of straightforward hygiene measures can reduce the risk where sap is collected and consumed.

FAO stresses that this is not a broad warning about everyday foods. Nipah virus is primarily associated with contact with infected animals or close contact between people. Why raw date palm sap is the specific concern
